São Roque do Pico is a relatively old town and commercial port (Cais do Pico) connected with the whaling industry. It is the site of the only former whale-processing factory on the island. Housed within this old whale-processing factory and within the harbor area is Pico’s second whaling museum, the Museu da Industria Baleeira. The museum opened in 1994 and showcases the old processing machines and boilers and how they were used to carry out industrial whaling. The quay opposite the old whaling factory, which is used by local fishermen, is where passengers can find inter-island ferry service to the neighboring islands, including São Jorge.
