Flora
Azores juniper, heather, green boom, Azorean bilberry, wood-white, buckthorn, Indian bay and African box are among the plants that populated the Azorean landscape at the time the islands were discovered. Over the years, many other species were introduced, including Japanese red cedar, acacia, iron tree and araucaria pine. Throughout all four seasons of the year, flowers bring color to the roads and gardens. Camellias, agapanthus, hydrangeas, belladonnas, ginger lilies and arum lilies are seen in abundance.
Fauna
The birds that can be found in the Azores include the buzzard, the priôlo or Azores bullfinch (a tiny bird unique to the Azores whose habitat is the Tronqueira Mountain Range in São Miguel), the Cory’s shearwater, the common tern, the ring dove or the blackbird, and others. The Atlantic Ocean abounds with fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and various species of dolphin and whale, including the famous sperm whale. Pike, carp, trout, zander (also known as pike-perch), perch and roach live in the lakes. An interesting species of bat with endemic characteristics can also be found in the Azores.
